What’s So Special About the Lucid Motors Air?
If you’ve been reading about electric vehicle companies like Tesla or Nissan, you may have heard of Lucid Motors. This California-based electric vehicle manufacturer has just introduced the Air sedan, its first model. It boasts a range of 520 miles and a 0-60 time of 8.5 seconds. But what’s so special about this EV? Read on to learn more about this company’s plans for the electric vehicle market.
Lucid Motors is an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer
Founded by two former Tesla employees, Lucid Motors is a promising electric vehicle startup. Though it’s still early in its development, it is considered one of Tesla’s most significant rivals. Its two co-founders are Peter Rawlinson, who was also a model S engineer. He joined Lucid in 2013, and has since risen to become its CEO. However, the company has had trouble establishing supplier relationships.
The company rebranded itself Lucid Motors, and announced plans to produce an all-electric luxury car. It broke ground on a $700 million factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, and plans to expand the production facility there to produce its own models. The new factory is expected to employ 6,000 people, create 100-million dollars in economic impact, and produce the Lucid Air sedan, the first luxury electric car.
Its first vehicle is the Air sedan
Lucid Motors has developed a new electric car that is expected to debut in 2023, the Air. The company has been working on the Air for eight years. The company’s first vehicle, the Air sedan, has been plagued by startup challenges. A pandemic has affected the auto supply chain. The company has had to cut costs in order to compete with Tesla and the Model 3 in the EV market.
A $1 billion investment from Saudi Arabia helped the company complete engineering development, testing, and the construction of its factory in Arizona. In addition to the investment, Lucid has begun a global retail strategy, focusing on North America. As of May 5, 2022, Lucid had sold 360 Air units and had 30,000 reservations. The next step is production rollout. And for now, the Air will be on display.
It has an EPA range of up to 520 miles
Lucid Motors has announced official EPA range and efficiency ratings for its Air sedans. The base model Air sedan has an EPA range of 516 miles. Upgrading to the 21-inch wheels will decrease the range to 481 miles. Lucid Motors has also released specs for the Dream Edition Range and Grand Touring models. The latter drop their range to 451 miles.
The company is aiming to deliver the first customer cars by the end of the year. It also announced the first Air sedan with an EPA range of 520 miles. These numbers are quite impressive considering the current range of conventional cars. The range of the Lucid Motors Air sedan will exceed that of the Tesla Model S. It will be the longest range EV on the road. With a full battery, the Lucid Air sedan will be able to travel up to 520 miles, which is far longer than any other car on the market.
It has a 0-60 time of 8.5 seconds
The upcoming launch of the Lucid Motors Air sedan is sure to make headlines. The car boasts a massive 113 kWh battery pack and 1080 horsepower, which is enough to blast the 0-60 time in 2.5 seconds. With a top speed of 168 mph and a range of 517 miles, the Lucid Motors Air will be one of the most powerful electric cars on the market.
Initially, Lucid started as a battery company called Atieva. The company’s first focus was electric vehicle supply, providing batteries to Formula E race cars. Now, the company is preparing to take on the likes of the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan. Although the 0-60 time is lower than those of other EVs, it still beats them in the performance stakes.
It has a three-year complimentary charging plan
The free three-year charging plan is offered to new Air owners through a partnership with Electrify America. This program provides supplemental charging for Air owners with three years of free DC fast charging from Electrify America’s 3,500 charging stations nationwide. Lucid Motors offers supplemental charging to all its Air models. During the trial period, new Air customers can take advantage of three years of free DC fast charging at Electrify America-certified stations.
The company’s charging stations are powered by 350 kW and 800 V architectures. Although these chargers are not yet widespread across the country, Lucid pays for a 10-minute grace period for customers who need to charge their cars for the first time. Lucid also pays for the 10 minutes between charging and driving. Customers must enroll in the Lucid app in order to take advantage of the charging network.
