Natalie Wood, 1981
Thirty-six years after Natalie Wood drowned off the shore of Catalina Island in California, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reopened the examination into her secretive death in February. With her then-husband, Robert Wagner, now a person of interest, Wood’s case stays one of many celebrity deaths still wrapped in doubt, at least among some investigators.
On Nov. 29, 1981, the juvenile star-turned-Oscar-nominated actress evaporated from her boat under possibilities that remain murky at best. Hours later, her body was found, clad in a flannel nightdress, red down jacket, and blue socks, floating in the Pacific about a mile from the yacht and of the island’s Blue Cavern Point.
Her death led to an unexpected drowning at the time. But the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reopened the subject in 2011; the subsequent year, the cause of death on her death certification was changed to “soaking and other doubtful factors.”
Now investigators have reopened the case again. So far, no bills have been buffed against Wagner or anybody else.
